A Formal Sitting Room
If this is right for your home, your living room will be an area where people can sit and talk. You will want to make sure you have plenty of seating available, a variety of recliners, sofas, and sitting chairs, as well as a simple, clutter-free living room design. You will not want a television in this formal sitting room, but possibly a radio or CD player. Make sure you have places for guests to set drink/food if you plan to serve tea, coffee, or snacks in the sitting room. Make a rule for your family that the formal dining area should never have shoes left, toys sitting around, or anything else. Having one nice room of the house is nice to have, but not practical for all families.
A Casual Family-Friendly Living Room
If your family plans to spend a lot of quality time in this room, make sure that your design accompanies that lifestyle. You will want plenty of open floor space, for games to be played or kids to play. You could even incorporate a table for game playing. Organization is a must in this living room design, because you need to design a space for toys, games, shoes, coats, and everything else to go. There are many organizational furniture units available, and you should be able to find one that fits your style easily.
A Game Room
Many families have moved to a more game-oriented living room. If your family plays lots of video games, you will need to adjust your living room design accordingly. If you own a Wii gaming system, you must have a large area directly in front of the television with plenty of room to move. Nothing breakable should be within 5 feet of this area, including hanging ceiling lights. You will want to incorporate a large entertainment center into your living room design, to hide all of the cords and machines that go along with video games.
Regardless of your family and interests, you will be able to design a living room to perfectly match their needs. Do research online, look at some various living room designs before making your decision. Worry more about what you will be using your room for that how you think it should look. A practical room will be enjoyed more than one that looks nice but doesn’t meet your family’s needs.
